Last Temple of Mystra
The Last Temple of Mystra is a secret underground temple complex beneath the shrine to Mystra in Targos. The temple was built in the tumultuous days following the Spellplague, when some lingering residue of Mystra’s power could still be tapped into by her priests and clerics. The temple was created to preserve the knowledge of Mystra’s religion and to lie ready to reopen in case, somehow, the goddess of magic returned to the world in the future.
However, over time the fading of Mystra’s power and the unpredictable effects of the Spellplague caused the magic of the temple’s wards to fail, corrupting the guardians that had been set upon the temple. Wards intended to hide the shrine failed, and a red dragon called Sylgrax and his draconian allies managed to infiltrate the temple. The temple’s guardian, Donael Lightstaff, remained uncorrupted (as he was not a construct of magical origin, but a living being entrusted with the safety of the temple), but the rest of the temple’s magic became twisted and faded.
The temple is still a shrine to Mystra and a repository of knowledge, though much of what it was meant to preserve has been lost.
